Thinking About Ozempic or Mounjaro? Read This First

I didn't take the jabs. I want to be clear about that up front, and equally clear that I'm not here to talk anyone out of them. Most of my time now is spent with people who did take them, and the conversation is nearly always the same one — not "does it work", but "what happens when I stop".

If you're weighing one up, here's the honest version of what I'd say on the phone.

    What they genuinely do well

GLP-1 medicines like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro turn the volume down on appetite. Food stops occupying your thoughts, portions shrink without a fight, and the weight comes off. For some people that relief, after years of losing that fight, is transformative. For people with a serious weight-related health problem, that can matter a great deal.

Anyone who tells you they don't work isn't being straight with you.

    The part nobody plans for

An injection provides appetite control. It doesn't teach a new eating pattern, it doesn't build muscle, and it doesn't undo the insulin resistance that took twenty or thirty years to develop. So the day it stops, appetite comes back to a body that hasn't changed its habits — and the weight tends to follow.

That's not a criticism of the drug. It's the same thing that happens after any diet ends. The difference is that the appetite suppression was so effective that most people never had to build the habits in the first place.

Losing the weight and fixing what caused it are two different jobs. A jab does the first one very well.

    Questions worth asking your prescriber

    • What's the plan for coming off, and when do we discuss it?
    • How will we protect muscle while the weight comes off — protein, resistance work?
    • What are we tracking besides weight? HbA1c, blood pressure, lipids?
    • What are the side effects for me specifically, and what would make us stop?
    • If cost or supply becomes a problem, what happens then?

What to build before you start

Everything on this list makes the injection work better, and all of it is what you'll be leaning on afterwards:

    1. Three meals a day, nothing in between.
    2. Protein and fibre at every meal — see what to eat for insulin resistance.
    3. Some resistance work, however modest. Muscle is where blood sugar goes.
    4. A sensible eating window most days rather than eating from waking to bedtime.
    5. Baseline bloods, so you can see what's improving and what isn't.

    The other route

There is a slower path, and it's the one I took. Steady the blood sugar with fibre before meals, eat properly, stop grazing, keep a sensible window, and give it ninety days. I was fifty-two, on seven medications, with Type 2 diabetes. Two stone and two medications gone by day 90; seven stone and all seven medications gone by eleven months; four years on, still maintaining.

It isn't as fast as an injection and I won't pretend otherwise. What it is, is something you can keep doing — which is why it also works as the bridge for people stepping off a jab. If that's where you are, read coming off Mounjaro and after Wegovy or Ozempic.

I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice. Never start, change or stop a prescription because of something you read online — including this. But do go into it with your eyes open, and with a plan for the after.

    Common questions

Do GLP-1 injections work for weight loss?
Yes — they reduce appetite substantially and people lose real weight on them. That part isn't in dispute and I'd never tell anyone they don't work.
What happens when you stop taking Ozempic or Mounjaro?
Appetite returns, and without something in place to replace the appetite control, a large share of the weight tends to come back over the following year. The injection was doing a job; when it stops, that job needs doing another way.
    Do GLP-1s fix insulin resistance?
They improve blood sugar control while you're on them, and losing weight helps insulin sensitivity. But the eating pattern underneath — grazing, sugar, ultra-processed food — is usually untouched, so the underlying problem is often still there when the injection stops.
Is there a natural alternative to the jabs?
The Feel Great protocol works on the same problem by different means: fibre before meals to steady blood sugar, proper nutrition, and a sensible eating window. It's slower and less dramatic than an injection, and it's something you can keep doing for as long as you like. It's what I used, and I'm not a doctor — it's not a substitute for a prescribed medicine.
Should I lose weight before starting a GLP-1?
That's a question for your prescriber. What I'd say is that whatever you build before you start — three meals instead of grazing, enough protein and fibre, movement to keep your muscle — is exactly what you'll need afterwards, so it's never wasted effort.
