    What Causes Insulin Resistance? The Honest Answer

    Short answer

    Insulin resistance builds from a pattern, not one cause: frequent sugar and refined-carbohydrate meals, eating across most of the day so insulin never drops, too little muscle to store glucose in, broken sleep, chronic stress and inactivity. Genetics and age affect how soon it shows. Because it's a pattern, it responds to changing the pattern — and it can exist at a normal weight.

    Nobody ever explained this to me. I was told my blood sugar was high, given tablets, and told to lose weight. The part that would actually have helped was understanding why it got high, because once you see it, the changes stop feeling arbitrary.

    First, what insulin is doing

    Eat, and glucose enters your blood. Insulin is the message that tells your cells to take it in. Send that message often enough and loudly enough for long enough, and the cells stop listening properly. Your pancreas responds by shouting — more insulin for the same job. That's insulin resistance, and high insulin is itself the thing that keeps fat locked in place and makes you tired after eating.

    What actually drives it

    1. How often you eat, not just what

    This is the one nobody mentions. Breakfast cereal, mid-morning biscuit, sandwich, tea and a treat, dinner, picking in front of the telly — that's six or seven insulin calls across fourteen hours. Insulin never gets back to baseline. Same food in three meals is a completely different demand.

    2. Refined carbohydrate and sugar

    White bread, cereal, crisps, biscuits, fizzy drinks, fruit juice. They hit fast and hard, and with little fibre to slow them down. It's not about one villain food; it's about how much of the week's calories arrive in that form.

    3. Not enough muscle

    Muscle is your largest store for glucose. Lose muscle across your forties and fifties — which happens by default without resistance work — and there are fewer places for blood sugar to go. This is a big part of why the same diet that was fine at thirty isn't at fifty.

    4. Visceral and liver fat

    Fat inside the abdomen and in the liver interferes with insulin signalling directly. It's also why waist measurement tells you more than weight, and why slim people can be affected.

    5. Sleep and stress

    Short or broken sleep raises blood sugar and appetite within days. Chronic stress keeps cortisol up, which raises glucose on purpose. Neither is a character flaw and both are measurable.

    6. Sitting still

    Movement lets muscle take up glucose with very little insulin. Long uninterrupted sitting removes that route entirely. A walk after your biggest meal is the cheapest intervention there is.

    What isn't the cause

    Getting older, being lazy, or lacking willpower. Age and genetics change the timing and the margin, not the mechanism. If you've been told it's just middle age, look at the list above and count how many apply to your normal week — that's usually the whole answer.

    Is insulin resistance reversible?
    It generally improves a lot when the pattern that caused it changes, and the earlier you start the easier it is. That's why prediabetes is a much better place to act than a Type 2 diagnosis. I went past prediabetes into Type 2 and seven medications, and still got back.
    Can you be slim and insulin resistant?
    Yes. Plenty of people with a normal BMI carry fat in the liver and around the organs and have the same problem — sometimes called being thin on the outside, fat on the inside. Fatigue after meals, brain fog and rising HbA1c can all show up without much visible weight.
